1979年，深圳被命名为经济特区，1980年8月批准设立经济特区。在这之前，它叫做宝安县，有近1700年的聚落历史，于1979年1月改名为深圳。 那时，城市人口仅1万人，农村人口为30万人，客家人约占65%。深圳原始方言是围头话，客家话、南头话、大鹏话、疍家话等。深圳原始居民 和 广州白话 比手画脚才能勉强相通。
