“纽约时报”（The New YorkTimes）报导，现年50岁的汤普森于将近上午7时在纽约市曼哈顿（Manhattan）中城（Midtown）的希尔顿饭店外遭到枪杀。
美国财经媒体CNBC报导，知情人士指称，嫌犯据描述使用带有消音器的枪枝。
据形容，这名枪手当时戴著黑色口罩，事发后逃离现场，预计警方将展开缉凶行动。
警方已证实现场发生枪击，警员目前聚集在饭店周围地区，当地通常是曼哈顿繁忙的一角。
