The nuclear submarine agreement signed by Australia, Britain and the US last September has already given the process a boost.

"Our world is becoming increasingly uncertain, so it is important that we take steps now to protect our people and national interests for decades to come," Prime Minister Scott Morrison was quoted as saying as he announced the expansion of the armed forces at a military base in Queensland.

Under the expansion plan, Australia's army, navy and air force will grow from 60,000 to more than 80,000, the largest expansion of the Armed forces since the Vietnam War. "There has never been a more important time," Mr Morrison said of the $38 billion expansion.

A few days ago, the Australian government said it would build a nuclear submarine base on the country's densely populated east coast, the report added. It will be able to house British and US submarines, as well as a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines that Australia plans to buy under an Australia-UK alliance defence agreement announced last year.

Last year, Japan reportedly said it would "greatly" boost its self-defense forces and drop previous limits on defense spending. Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi said the country would invest in space, cyber and electromagnetic warfare capabilities, and strengthen its military forces stationed on the Nansei Islands.
