World Cancer DayToday is World Cancer Day. Nearly everyone has been touched by cancer: if not you personally, then someone you know or love. Take a moment today to think about someone you know who has experienced cancer. In 2015, it was estimated that over 2.8 million people died of cancer in China – an average of 7,500 deaths per day. In the same year, there were an estimated 4.2 million new cancer cases in China and the number of people being diagnosed and dying from cancer continues to rise. Cancer is among the leading causes of death in China. While the annual increase in these numbers is disappointing, but the real tragedy is that most of these cases are preventable. It is possible to reduce your risks by maintaining a smoke-free and healthy lifestyle.

In China, lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, and lung and breast cancer are the most commonly diagnosed in women. It’s no secret the high incidence of lung cancer is in large part due to the high percentage of Chinese smokers (there are over 315 million smokers in China).  Quit smoking to reduce your risk of lung cancer today! As well as tobacco, other factors like air pollution also play a large role in China’s high rates of lung cancer. According to a recent Chinese study, the 5-year survival rate for those who have lung cancer is only 15%, so put down those cigarettes and give your lungs the clean air they deserve. According to a Chinese study, the 5-year survival rate for the most common cancers in China (lung, stomach, liver and esophageal cancers) are all below 30%. This number is scary, but there are steps you can take to reduce your risks. Besides refraining from smoking, watching your alcohol intake is another thing you can do. Excessive alcohol consumption is responsible for almost 1 in 5 cancer-related deaths in China. Reduce your risks by managing your alcohol intake! In addition, make sure that you’re eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables and maintain an active lifestyle to reduce your overall risks.

Cases of breast cancer in China are on the rise. In tackling breast cancer, early detection and treatment is key. Women are encouraged to have regular breast cancer screenings in order to improve breast cancer outcome and survival. With cancer numbers so high, scarcely anybody can avoid being touched in one way or another. A cancer diagnosis does not just impact those directly affected – friends and families suffer heartache and financial hardship. While adopting a healthy lifestyle reduces the risk of cancer, the importance of early detection and treatment cannot be overstated. With few exceptions, early stage cancers are less lethal and more treatable than late stage cancers.

“Cancer is not just an individual health issue – it reaches into all aspects of society, including the economy and the public health system. Raising awareness of the warning signs, promoting early diagnosis, and improving treatment must continue to be a focus of China’s cancer control efforts. China’s ongoing health reform creates the opportunity to establish a modern health system which reverses the trend of increasing cases of cancer and contributes to a healthy and prosperous society,” said Dr Bernhard Schwartländer, WHO Representative in China.
