Relief for 18 displaced families, care for affected employees and one colleague’s courage at Ground Zero reflect hospitality rooted in bayanihan

September 3, 2026 - Landco Lifestyle Ventures, through John Hay Hotels, responded to the Guisad Surong landslide with relief for displaced families, direct assistance for affected colleagues and employee volunteerism during search and rescue operations at Ground Zero。

“This landslide reached our neighbors and our own colleagues, and our response had to be equal to that. Relief for the families in Guisad Surong, direct care for the employees who lost so much, colleagues who chose to be at Ground Zero themselves: all of it came from the same place. That is the character of this team, and it holds firmest when conditions are at their worst,” said John Hay Hotels General Manager Roberto A. Garcia。

  Relief Built Through Partnership

Working with the Regional Agriculture and Fishery Council–Cordillera Administrative Region (RAFC-CAR) and partner organizations, John Hay Hotels’ Dap-ayan ti John Hay Labor-Management Cooperation (LMC) consolidated donations for families displaced by the landslide。

The LMC Corporate Social Responsibility Committee and Human Resources team mobilized employees across departments to gather, sort and repack hygiene kits and other essential relief items。

The effort reached 18 families, or approximately 66 individuals, at two evacuation centers: 35 at the International Academy and 31 at the Guisad Surong Barangay Hall. Donations included clothing, cash aid, relief goods and hygiene kits containing towels, dental and toiletry essentials, slippers and laundry bags. RAFC-CAR and its partners coordinated the distribution。

John Hay Hotels Director of Human Resources and LMC overall co-chairperson Wilna M. Baoa helped guide the response. Human Resources Supervisor and LMC overall chairperson Patricia Rosse T. Aguilar joined the turnover to RAFC-CAR with Conventions Manager Rowdy L. Takinan, Human Resources Assistants Kenneth Russel B. Reñon and Jhonalyn D. Bautista, Housekeeping Supervisor Hilda Y. Coycoyen, Conventions Assistant Selwyn P. Posidio and Visual Content Creator Karl Russel M. Rillorta。

Assistant Human Resources Manager Leslie C. Diego, co-chairperson of the Family Welfare Committee, and Front Office Manager Je-Jirah C. Cadangen, chairperson of the CSR Committee, also supported the initiative alongside Takinan, the CSR Committee’s co-chairperson。

“Our teams did not wait to be asked. Colleagues from different departments gave their own hours to gather, sort and repack so the kits could reach Guisad Surong within days. Working through the LMC and with RAFC-CAR allowed us to move quickly and make certain the assistance reached the families who needed it most,” said General Manager Roberto A. Garcia。

Caring for Colleagues When They Need It Most

The landslide struck close to home for John Hay Hotels. One employee lost six family members and was staying at an evacuation center. The LMC provided the employee and family with a cavan of rice, towels, linens, 99 bottles of energy drinks, dental kits, toiletries, clothing and PHP 5,000 in cash assistance。

General Manager Garcia and Resident Managers Crystal Claire T. Camacho and Christine Marie B. Cua led the management team in checking on the colleague. Hotel representatives visited the family, helped them transfer to a new residence and extended further assistance as they began rebuilding。

“When a colleague loses six members of the family in a single night, our response cannot end with a donation. We visited, helped the family settle into a new home and stayed close in the weeks that followed. Caring for our people is not something we switch on during a calamity; it is how this house is run,” said John Hay Hotels Garden Wing Resident Manager Christine Marie B. Cua。

At the height of the severe weather, department heads, assistant department heads and Human Resources conducted welfare checks, especially among colleagues in landslide-prone or affected areas. Management shared typhoon and road updates, coordinated across departments and inspected hotel facilities for risks to employees and guests。

John Hay Hotels also activated its established calamity protocols, providing temporary sleeping quarters, safe transport when needed, charging access during power interruptions, and hot meals, soup and coffee at employee canteens. Former Rooms Services Manager Emmanuelle B. Gomez and team leaders across the Forest and Garden Wings formed part of the wider support network。

“Through the worst of the weather, our concern was that no colleague would travel an unsafe road, sit out a shift in the cold or lose contact with their family. Sleeping quarters, hot meals, safe transport and a place to charge a phone are modest provisions, but on those nights they mattered a great deal,” said John Hay Hotels Forest Wing Resident Manager Crystal Claire T. Camacho。

A Colleague’s Courage at Ground Zero

Bayanihan took its most personal form through Hilda Y. Coycoyen, Housekeeping Supervisor at John Hay Hotels’ Garden Wing and chairperson of the LMC Livelihood Committee. Known among colleagues as “Sir Kardo,” Coycoyen joined volunteers and rescuers at Ground Zero on August 10, 2026, helping search for three relatives of the affected employee. All three were later confirmed among those who lost their lives in the landslide。

Coycoyen’s decision to be present and help a grieving colleague embodied the employee-led response: relief for displaced families, practical care for colleagues and hands-on volunteerism when every effort mattered。

  Bayanihan as a Continuing Commitment

John Hay Hotels continues to coordinate with RAFC-CAR on further assistance for Guisad Surong. Beyond this initiative, the hotel works with local governments, universities and other agencies through donations, fundraising, manpower and volunteer service。

For Landco, hospitality carries a responsibility beyond the hotel doors: to listen to communities, protect the people behind every guest experience and show up with compassion when those communities face their most difficult days。
