伟大母亲 美国出生熊猫产下第8子

一只在美国出生但已返回中国的大猫熊，17日顺利产下第八只猫熊宝宝，这对繁殖不易的濒危动物猫熊而言，非常难得。

华美（Hua Mei）1999年8月出生在美国圣地牙哥动物园（San Diego Zoo），是在中国西南的四川省（Sichuan）卧龙（Wolong）保护中心顺利产下一只雄性宝宝。

2004年华美从美国回到中国后，已经产下3对双胞胎和2只单胎。

"Hua Mei" gave birth to twins Wednesday night, which weighed 157 grams and 130 grams respectively. "Hua Mei" was born in the San Diego Zoo in the United States in 1999 and was returned to China last February. It is the first giant panda which was born abroad and later returned to China.

中国租借猫熊给世界各地动物园，但根据大部分租约，猫熊后代均属中国所有。

以中华和美国命名的华美，去年产下第7只小猫熊后，被封为「伟大的母亲」。华美现在正努力哺育她新生的健康、活泼宝宝。

大猫熊是世界濒危动物，目前约有1600只生活在野外、超过300只在动物园饲养。大猫熊性欲很低，所以繁育工作相当困难。

今天新生的小宝宝是卧龙保护中心今年繁育的第16只猫熊，年底之前数量可望再增加。
