今儿一大早，一位生意相当有成的大学同学，在同学微信群里发布罗伯特•肯尼迪1968年对美国当时状况的激烈批评，反响热烈。肯尼迪抨击“唯GDP论”尤其猛烈，俨然把那当作是“狗的屁”或者“鸡的屁”。
“鸡的屁”GDP之外，中国还缺什么？
的确，现代化、或者说转型期，各国都有相似的地方，区别仅仅在于时间的先后。中国当下所遭遇的所有问题，甚至包括民权，都能从美国历史上找到几近雷同的对应。如何镜鉴、而非情绪化地膜拜或者排斥，值得中国的所有“知道分子”们深思----当然，有利益考量的左右之争者不会在乎的。
有一点可以肯定，从历史经验看，转型期都需要一个漫长的过程。对这点怀疑的人，可以找出任何一个反例来----没有！没有任何一个国家的现代化是一蹴而就的。同样，历史经验也告诉我们，但凡信誓旦旦、急于用某种“主义”改造中国的，最后不仅会南辕北辙，也往往成为饿狼驱逐饱狼的武器而已。
肯尼迪批判GDP的部分，我节录在下，英文来自肯尼迪图书馆的官网，中文翻译来自网络，据说是著名经济学家梁小民先生翻译（待考证）。我常在商学院的课堂上引用这段，学员们都很感兴趣。

即使我们消除了物质的贫困，我们还面临一个更大的任务，那就是---满足的贫困，目标的贫困，尊严的贫困---还困扰着我们每一个人。
Even if we act to erase material poverty, there is another greater task, it is to confront the poverty of satisfaction - purpose and dignity - that afflicts us all.
在太长时间里，我们太注重物质的积累，而放弃了个人的美德和社会的价值。我们的国民生产总值现在已经超过八千亿美元，但这个国民生产总值---如果我们用它来衡量美国---这个国民生产总值包括了空气污染和香烟广告，以及为交通事故而奔忙的救护车。
Too much and for too long, we seemed to have surrendered personal excellence and community values in the mere accumulation of material things. Our Gross National Product, now, is over $800 billion dollars a year, but that Gross National Product - if we judge the United States of America by that - that Gross National Product counts air pollution and cigarette advertising, and ambulances to clear our highways of carnage.
包括了我们装在门上的特种锁和关撬锁的人的监狱，包括了我们对红木森林的破坏和因城市无序蔓延而消失的自然奇观。
It counts special locks for our doors and the jails for the people who break them. It counts the destruction of the redwood and the loss of our natural wonder in chaotic sprawl.
它包括了凝固汽油弹，包括了核弹头，包括了警察用来应付城市骚乱的装甲车，包括了惠特曼步枪和斯佩克刀，包括了为了向孩子推销玩具而美化暴力的电视节目。
It counts napalm and counts nuclear warheads and armored cars for the police to fight the riots in our cities. It counts Whitman''s rifle and Speck''s knife, and the television programs which glorify violence in order to sell toys to our children.

Yet the gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages, the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials.
它不包括我们的机智和勇气，不包括我们的智慧和学问，不包括我们的同情心，不包括我们对国家的热爱。总之，它衡量一切，却把那些令人生有价值东西排除在外。
It measures neither our wit nor our courage, neither our wisdom nor our learning, neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country, it measures everything in short, except that which makes life worthwhile.
它告诉我们美国的方方面面，却不能告诉我们为什么为她自豪。
And it can tell us everything about America except why we are proud that we are Americans.
